What does the Parent Council Do?
The Parent Council represents the views of parents and works in partnership with the school to support its development. Its key roles include improving communication between parents and staff, discussing school policies and priorities, and helping enhance the learning experience for pupils. We also provide feedback on issues such as school improvements, budgets, and curriculum developments. Ultimately, it helps strengthen the relationship between families and the school to benefit the entire school community.
Examples of work the Parent Council does:
- Regularly meets with the Headteacher and Principal Teachers to discuss curriculum, attainment and the School Quality Improvement Plan
- Oversees the PTA and ensures funding is in-place for the activities they plan
- Involved in working alongside Midlothian Council and local Councilors in aspects of school governance, for example the appointment of the Headteacher
- Engagement with other local Community Groups, for example Gorebridge & District Community Council
What can the Parent Council NOT do?
While the Parent Council is there to represent the views of the wider Parent Forum, it cannot get involved in individual cases between pupils, parents and staff. You can find out more about the limitations of the Parent Council on the Education Scotland website.
